We have a fantastic opportunity for an Assistant Cook to join our friendly team, working at a field centre catering for groups of all ages, resident and non-resident, based within the South Devon area close to field sites in Dartmoor National Park and urban centres in Plymouth and Torbay.

Work/Life balance - No late shifts.

Overall Job purpose:

Being an Assistant Cook with FSC is very different to working in a conventional restaurant.  Our kitchen is a busy and sometimes hectic environment (we regularly cater for up to 150 covers), however, the nature of our business means that we operate set mealtimes with one or two sittings at breakfast and dinner; and provide occasional light lunches/refreshments for small groups during the day (the majority of our customers have packed lunches which they make themselves).  Dinner service is normally completed by 7pm and menus are limited to 2-3 choices plus a vegetarian option.  Even so, we are committed to promoting healthy eating and incorporating organic, fair-trade and local produce in our menus.

You will need to have the ability to multi-task effectively and be willing to adapt flexibly to changes within a well-established and continually developing Centre whilst contributing to a friendly welcoming atmosphere for customers and colleagues at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cooking and delivery of breakfast (earliest usually 7.30am) and evening meals (latest usually 7pm) for up to 150 residential visitors, and occasional meals for non-residential groups, in accordance with health and hygiene regulations
  • Preparation of home-baked items for packed lunches / refreshments
  • Assisting with the monitoring and recording of all catering functions in accordance with safe catering practices e.g. HACCP, Safer Food Better Business
  • Assisting with the compilation of a varied range of menus to satisfy differing user groups, taking account of special diets and the ‘healthy eating’ agenda using, where practicable, local, organic and fair-trade ingredients

We ask that you have –

  • A positive and passionate work attitude
  • A desire to show pride in all aspects of your work
  • A flexible approach with a willingness to adapt to changes
  • An ability to work using your own initiative both independently and as a competent, effective team member
  • An ability to work under pressure and prioritise work to meet tight deadlines
  • Always treating others with courtesy, dignity and respect
  • A commitment and contribution to improving FSC’s environmental performance
  • A committed and proactive approach to personal development; motivated to learn new skills and overcome new challenges

Benefits

  • Holidays - 28 days excluding bank holidays (increases with length of service - up to 2 extra days)
  • Pension
  • Sick Pay
  • 24hr Counselling Helpline Service
  • Life Assurance
  • Health Cash Plan
  • Friendly Team
  • Free parking
  • FSC Workwear
  • Training & Development
  • Happy to talk flexible working!
  • Accommodation and food during working hours can be provided on a chargeable basis

We reserve the right to close the vacancy if we’re in receipt of sufficient applications.

Please apply early to avoid disappointment.

Interviews will take place at Slapton Field Centre as appropriate.

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted by telephone and/or email.
